Planning Artificial Light at Night for Pedestrian Visual Diversity in Public Spaces

نویسندگان

چکیده

This article makes the case for addressing pedestrian visual diversity when planning artificial light public spaces at night, by drawing upon original findings from an exploratory study where twenty-one open-ended interviews were conducted with experts in fields of lighting, urban and health studies. Specifically, this provides (1) introduction concept diversity, defined as condition, capabilities needs visually impaired pedestrians, (2) a systematization overlooked issues diverse pedestrians (3) proposition participatory framework application lightwalks experiential method involving data collection on analysis lighting night. In conclusion, it identifies five strands further research nexus space night studies inclusive planning.

Does pedestrian useful visual field change at night?

This paper reports an investigation into the shape and size of the useful visual field over which pedestrian visual gaze tends to fall during day and night and discusses the factors affecting useful visual field and the function of peripheral vision. A previous study by authors explored what people look at at night in the streets employing an eye tracking methodology. This study is secondary an...

Microbial diversity and community respiration in freshwater sediments influenced by artificial light at night.

An increasing proportion of the Earth's surface is illuminated at night. In aquatic ecosystems, artificial light at night (ALAN) may influence microbial communities living in the sediments. These communities are highly diverse and play an important role in the global carbon cycle. We combined field and laboratory experiments using sediments from an agricultural drainage system to examine how AL...

Artificial light at night advances avian reproductive physiology.

Artificial light at night is a rapidly increasing phenomenon and it is presumed to have global implications. Light at night has been associated with health problems in humans as a consequence of altered biological rhythms. Effects on wild animals have been less investigated, but light at night has often been assumed to affect seasonal cycles of urban dwellers. Using light loggers attached to fr...

Artificial Light at Night and Cancer: Global Study

Background: Artificial light at night (ALAN) has been linked to increased risk of cancers in body sites like the breast and colorectum. However exposure of ALAN as an environmental risk factor and its relation to cancers in humans has never been studied in detail. Objective: To explore the association of ALAN with all forms of cancers in 158 countries. Materials and Methods: An ecological study...

Models of Pedestrian Adaptive Behaviour in Hot Outdoor Public Spaces

Current studies of outdoor thermal comfort are limited to calculating thermal indices or interviewing people. The first method does not take into account the way people use this space, whereas the second one is limited to one particular study area. Simulating people’s thermal perception along with their activities in public urban spaces will help architects and city planners to test their conce...
